DS18 GEN-X104D Review: 10-Inch Dual-Coil Sub, 400 W RMS and 800 W Max
The DS18 GEN-X104D is a 10-inch (254 mm) dual voice coil subwoofer. DS18 rates it at 400 W RMS and prints a separate 800 W maximum figure beside it; only the first describes continuous power. It has two 4 Ω coils, 87 dB sensitivity and a 137 mm mounting depth. The India MRP is ₹18,990, which is ₹1,000 below the 12-inch GEN-X124D. It is a candidate for a first subwoofer in a hatchback or sedan boot, driven by a monoblock rated near 400 W RMS. You can see it on our DS18 GEN-X104D product page.

Quick summary
Size an amplifier by the 400 W RMS rating. The 800 W figure is DS18's maximum power, exactly double the RMS number, and is not a continuous rating.
Two 4 Ω voice coils: wired in parallel the sub presents 2 Ω, wired in series it presents 8 Ω.
87 dB sensitivity and a 137 mm mounting depth. DS18 publishes no recommended box volume for this model.
DS18's own web store shows four reviews of this model, all in the top rating band, though two of the entries are identical. We have not read any independent reviews.

Figures come from DS18's GEN-X104D page and match our listing. The page is DS18's own marketing and data, so treat it as the maker's claim.
400 W RMS or 800 W: which number counts
DS18 uses both figures on this model, and its own web address for the page leads with 800 W while the product heading beside it says 400 W RMS. Maximum power is a ceiling, not a level to run at, and the page lists no peak or program rating. Buying against the larger number is the easy mistake: an amplifier picked to deliver 800 W would be twice what the sub is rated to take continuously.
DS18's published warranty terms also exclude damage from overpowering a subwoofer, so the RMS figure matters for more than sound. Our guide to working out what amplifier a system needs covers the matching logic.
Enclosure and wiring
DS18 lists no recommended volume for this model, though it does publish Thiele/Small data: Fs 54.6 Hz, Qts 0.551 and Vas 10.6 L. DS18 also has a general box chart organised by driver size, not by model, which says its volumes usually land in a 35–40 Hz tuning area. A box builder can work from the T/S figures, and a Qts of 0.551 is in the range usually associated with sealed boxes, which tend to be the more compact option. VA3 Car Studio builds custom subwoofer boxes, so a box can be made to whatever volume you settle on.
The two 4 Ω coils give you a choice. In parallel the sub presents 2 Ω, which suits an amplifier rated at 2 Ω. In series it presents 8 Ω, and you would need to check the amplifier's rated output at 8 Ω before choosing that route. For a 2 Ω load, JL's JD500/1 is rated 500 W RMS at 14.4 V and 400 W at 12.5 V, a close fit. DS18's own G3600.1D is rated 900 W RMS at 2 Ω (14.4 V) in our listing, more than twice this sub's rating, so the gain would need careful setting.
What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 GEN-X104D
When we checked in October 2026, the only owner feedback we could read was on DS18's own web store. We did not reach an independent test or forum thread for this model, so treat what follows as a small, favourable sample.
DS18's page for the GEN-X104D shows four reviews, all in the top rating band, with no average given. Two of the four entries are word-for-word identical, so it is really three distinct reviews. Reviewers praise the bass impact, and one says it hits hard and crisp. Another mounted two under a seat and was pleased with the impact, and a third found the sound quality great.
DS18's page for the 15-inch GEN-X154D covers a different model, not this one. It shows twelve reviews and displays five, none dated. Two of those describe infinite-baffle installs, with the subs playing well from roughly 20 to 90 Hz in one and from about 28 Hz upward in the other, and a third says they sound really good for the price range.
GEN-X104D against the GEN-X124D and ZR10
The DS18 GEN-X124D (₹19,990 MRP) is rated 450 W RMS, 87.5 dB, 20–250 Hz, with a 146 mm mounting depth and a 277 mm cutout against this sub's 137 mm and 234 mm. Its Vas of 23.4 L is more than double the 10.6 L here, so expect it to want a larger box.
The DS18 ZR10 (₹24,990 MRP, ₹6,000 more) is also a 10-inch, rated 700 W RMS with a 2.5 in (61.6 mm) coil, but its sensitivity is 81 dB against 87 dB here. The GEN-X104D is the more sensitive driver, while the ZR10 takes 300 W more continuous power.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy the GEN-X104D if you want a 10-inch sub for a first system, you can give it an amplifier near 400 W RMS at 2 Ω, and you would rather spend on a good box and clean wiring than on a bigger driver.
Look elsewhere if you want a published box recipe for the exact model, you plan to run well over 400 W RMS per sub, or you want independent reviews before you buy. For more power handling, the DS18 ZR12 is rated 750 W RMS and the ZR10 700 W RMS.
Installation notes for Indian cars
DS18 lists a 137 mm mounting depth, so check the clearance behind the baffle as well as the outside size of the box. Keep the amplifier out of the hottest and wettest places: a closed boot in an Indian summer and a monsoon-damp spare-wheel well are both poor spots for it. Idle voltage with the air-conditioning running can fall below 14.4 V, and amplifier output falls with it.
Treat the boot lid and parcel shelf against rattles; our sound-damping guide explains how. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation.
Price and where to buy
The DS18 GEN-X104D has an India MRP of ₹18,990. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the GEN-X104D listing, which describes it as a genuine DS18 product.

The bottom line
The GEN-X104D is a 400 W RMS, 10-inch dual-coil driver whose 800 W label is a maximum, not a promise. DS18 publishes no box volume for it, so budget for a properly built box. Read the RMS line, match the amplifier to it, and it should suit a first 10-inch system.
DS18 GEN-X104D FAQ
Is the DS18 GEN-X104D an 800 W subwoofer?
No. DS18 rates it at 400 W RMS and lists 800 W as its maximum power, exactly double. Use the RMS figure when choosing an amplifier, because the maximum is not a continuous rating.
How should I wire the GEN-X104D's dual voice coils?
Wired in parallel, the two 4 Ω coils present 2 Ω. Wired in series they present 8 Ω. Choose the option that matches the load your amplifier is rated for, and compare its RMS output at that load with 400 W.
Which box suits the GEN-X104D?
DS18 publishes no recommended volume for this model, only Thiele/Small figures such as a Vas of 10.6 L. Ask us about a custom box built to the volume you choose, and fit it to your boot before you commit.
