Morel Ultimo PS 124D Review: The EISA-Winning 12-Inch That Needs Only 86 mm

Oct 7
6 min read

The Morel Ultimo PS 124D is the 12-inch subwoofer in Morel's Ultimo PowerSlim line: dual 4-ohm voice coils, 700 W RMS (2,100 W peak) and a mounting depth of just 86 mm. EISA named the 12-inch PowerSlim its In-Car Subwoofer for 2023-2024. At ₹89,990 MRP it is the dearer of the two PowerSlims we list, and well below our Ultimo Ti subs. It suits SUV, MUV and pickup owners who want a 12-inch cone without the depth a conventional sub needs. See the current offer on our Morel Ultimo PS 124D product page.

Morel Ultimo PS 124D 12-inch shallow-mount PowerSlim car subwoofer

Key takeaways

  • A 12-inch sub that needs only 3.4 inches (86 mm) of mounting depth, with a 268.6 mm cutout.

  • Morel publishes a 22.7-litre sealed box (F3 of 36 Hz) and a 39.36-litre vented box tuned to 24 Hz.

  • EISA's jury praised its deep, tonally accurate bass from a shallow design; that is an award write-up, not owner feedback.

  • Dual 4-ohm coils make one-sub and two-sub systems easy to plan around Morel's 350 W to 700 W RMS window.

Figures come from Morel's PowerSlim installation guide and its datasheet, and agree with our store listing. Morel's website returned an error whenever we tried it in October 2026, so we read the documents through UK retailer Celsus ICE.

What an 86 mm-deep 12-inch changes

A conventional 12-inch such as our Ultimo Ti SC 122 is listed at about 144 mm deep. The PS 124D's 86 mm means the enclosure can be a slab rather than a cube, so it can sit under a false boot floor or stand against a seat back. Morel's PowerSlim datasheet credits a Uniflow chassis, Morel's EVC external-voice-coil motor, a HexaCore cone of carbon fibre and aluminium honeycomb, a double ferrite magnet and Progression Field Symmetry suspension.

The trade-off is excursion. Morel lists ±8 mm of linear travel, so the 12-inch cone area does much of the work, and the box volume and subsonic filtering matter more than they would with a deep, long-throw driver.

Sealed or vented: what Morel's volumes mean in a car

The sealed option is 0.8 cu ft (22.7 litres) with an F3 of 36 Hz. The vented box is 1.4 cu ft (39.36 litres), tuned to 24 Hz, and Morel's guide recommends it for the best overall performance, with sealed as the answer when space is limited. The guide also asks for the vent's opening and inside corners to be rounded to reduce port noise.

The 22.7-litre sealed box is easier to place in a hatchback or sedan; the 39.36-litre vented box is more practical in an SUV, MUV or pickup. VA3 Car Studio builds custom subwoofer enclosures, so we can build either to Morel's published volume and shape it to the space you have.

Amplifier plans for one or two PS 124D subs

One sub. Wire the coils in parallel for 2 ohms and aim for 350 W to 700 W RMS. Morel's own MPS 1.550 is listed at 550 W RMS into 2 ohms. The JL Audio XDM600/1 is rated at 600 W into 2 ohms at 14.4 V but 500 W at 12.5 V, a reminder that output falls when the voltage sags at idle with the AC on. The Zapco ST-1000XM III makes 700 W into 2 ohms, the top of Morel's range, so set its gain with care.

Two subs. Wire each sub's coils in series (8 ohms) and join the pair in parallel for a 4-ohm load. The Zapco ST-1500XM III is rated at 800 W into 4 ohms, about 400 W per sub. Alternatively, wire both subs to 1 ohm and use an amplifier rated for that load: the ST-1000XM III lists 1,000 W into 1 ohm, about 500 W per sub. Either way, set the gain with a test tone, and in a vented box use a subsonic filter set just below the 24 Hz tuning if your amplifier has one.

What owners and reviewers say about the Morel Ultimo PS 124D

When we checked in October 2026, the main verdict on record was an award. EISA's 2023-2024 in-car subwoofer award went to the 12-inch Ultimo PowerSlim, which EISA lists as the PS12D; Morel's datasheet lists only one 12-inch PowerSlim, the PS 124D.

The EISA jury text praises powerful, deep and tonally accurate bass despite the shallow design, and says it saves boot space without hurting sound quality. It credits the suspension with controlling the cone's movement, cutting distortion and helping power handling, and describes the cone as rigid but light. That is a jury summary, not a measured test or a long-term owner report.

We found no owner reviews. The US listing at OnlineCarStereo had no customer reviews, and its spec list (a single 4-ohm coil and the 10-inch box volumes) contradicts Morel's guide, so we haven't used it. If you own a PS 124D, we'd like to hear how it has worked in your car.

Morel Ultimo PS 124D vs PS 104D, Ti SC 122 and Kinetic KS124

The Morel Ultimo PS 104D (₹84,990 MRP) is the 10-inch PowerSlim. It needs about 80 mm of depth and much smaller boxes (12.7 litres sealed or 22.7 litres vented), with the same 700 W RMS rating and 82 dB against the 12-inch's 83 dB. Choose the 10-inch when width, not just depth, is tight.

The Ultimo Ti SC 122 costs ₹5,000 less at ₹84,990 MRP, but it is a conventional-depth 12-inch with a single 2-ohm coil and a 600 W RMS rating. The Morel Kinetic KS124 (₹12,990 MRP) is a full-depth 12-inch rated at 350 W RMS; if depth isn't a problem, it costs a fraction as much.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the PS 124D if you want 12-inch bass in a slim box, you can find 22.7 litres or more in width and length, and you'll pair it with an amplifier in Morel's 350 W to 700 W range.

Look elsewhere if depth isn't your constraint, since a conventional 12-inch such as our Kinetic KS124 costs far less, or if a 22.7-litre slab still won't fit, in which case the 10-inch PS 104D is the better PowerSlim.

Installation notes for Indian cars

In SUVs and MUVs, a thin enclosure under a raised boot floor keeps the load area flat. In a pickup, the space behind the seats is the usual target. Measure carefully: the box still needs 22.7 or 39.36 litres of internal volume, and the vented version must also fit its port.

Bolt or strap the enclosure down so it can't move over speed breakers, give the amplifier air in a hot boot, and grommet every cable that passes through metal. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation, and DSP tuning if the sub needs to blend with an upgraded front stage.

Morel Ultimo PS 124D - another view

The bottom line

The Morel Ultimo PS 124D is a 12-inch sub for cars where depth, not budget, is the limit. Morel documents it well, with sealed and vented volumes and a clear power window, and EISA's jury rated the 12-inch PowerSlim highly. Owner feedback is still missing, and the price only makes sense if a conventional 12-inch won't fit.

Morel Ultimo PS 124D FAQ

Is the Morel Ultimo PS 124D the EISA award winner?

EISA's In-Car Subwoofer 2023-2024 award went to the 12-inch Ultimo PowerSlim, which EISA lists as the PS12D. Morel's PowerSlim datasheet lists only one 12-inch model, the PS 124D with dual 4-ohm coils.

What box does the PS 124D need?

Morel publishes a sealed box of 0.8 cu ft (22.7 litres) with an F3 of 36 Hz, and a vented box of 1.4 cu ft (39.36 litres) tuned to 24 Hz. Its guide prefers the vented box when there is room.

Can I run two PS 124D subs from one amplifier?

Yes. Wire each sub's coils in series and the pair in parallel for 4 ohms, or wire everything in parallel for 1 ohm if the amplifier is rated for that load. Aim for 350 W to 700 W RMS per sub.
