JL Audio VX1000/5i Review: One-Box DSP System Amplifier for Speakers and Subwoofer
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio VX1000/5i is a five-channel Class D system amplifier with an integrated DSP: four main channels for speakers and one subwoofer channel, rated at 100 W x 4 plus 600 W x 1, all into 2 Ω at 14.4 V. Its Indian MRP of ₹1,99,990 places it between the VX600/6i and the VX800/8i in JL's 2026 VXi line-up. It is the VXi for buyers who want a tuned front stage and proper bass from a single chassis, which matters in an SUV where boot space is precious. Current pricing is on our VX1000/5i product page.

The short version
Four 75 W channels (at 4 Ω) plus a 600 W subwoofer channel at 2 Ω, all controlled by one DSP.
The subwoofer channel's 2 Ω rating holds at 600 W even at 12.5 V, according to JL's figures.
A dual 4 Ω, 600 W subwoofer wired to 2 Ω is a natural match for the bass channel.
Owner feedback is limited to three brief retailer reviews, one of them only about packaging.

A whole system from one chassis
A typical Indian upgrade that keeps the factory touchscreen ends up with a four-channel amplifier for the doors, a monoblock for the subwoofer and a processor in between, each with its own power, ground and signal wiring. The VX1000/5i replaces all three. Its inputs accept 200 mV to 16 V RMS, enough to take a factory head unit's speaker-level output, and the DSP shapes the signal for both the speakers and the subwoofer.
Having the bass channel under the same DSP is the real advantage. The crossover between doors and subwoofer, the subwoofer's level and its delay are all set in one TüN project, so the bass can be timed to sound as if it comes from the front of the car rather than the boot. Our article on why DSP matters in car audio explains the principle, and the DSP set-up guide covers the tuning steps.
JL's page also mentions up to six presets recalled by remote, so a DRC-205 can switch between, say, a daily tune and one with more bass for long highway runs. Phone control needs the VXi-BTC.
Matching the 600 W subwoofer channel
The cleanest match is a dual 4 Ω subwoofer rated at 600 W RMS, with its coils wired in parallel to 2 Ω. JL's 10W6v3-D4 and 12W6v3-D4 are both rated exactly that, so channel and driver meet at the same figure. Wiring the coils in series gives 8 Ω, for which JL publishes no rating and which would waste much of the channel's power.
A single 4 Ω driver works too, at 400 W. The 12W3v3-4 is rated at 500 W RMS, so it has headroom on this channel. Where boot depth is tight, the 13TW5v2-4 (4 Ω, 600 W) mounts only about 67 mm deep, though it will see 400 W rather than its full rating.
The 12.5 V figures matter in India. Rated output at 2 Ω stays at 600 W at 12.5 V, while the 4 Ω figure drops from 400 W to 360 W. In stop-start traffic with the AC running, a 2 Ω load therefore keeps more of its punch.
Putting the four main channels to work
Four channels at 75 W into 4 Ω suit two plans. The first is an active two-way front stage, for which the Active version of the C6-650 (₹1,14,990 MRP) is one JL option. The second is a passive front set plus rear speakers, such as the C2-650 components in front, whose recommended amplifier power is 15 to 100 W per channel, and a coaxial such as the C2-650x in the rear doors.
What you can't do is run an active three-way front stage and a subwoofer from this one amplifier. That needs six front channels, which is where the VX800/8i comes in, or a second VXi networked through the VXi-HUB.
What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio VX1000/5i
We found one source of verifiable owner feedback when we checked in October 2026: three reviews on OnlineCarStereo, a US retailer, dated November 2019 and April 2024, with no overall score.
One review covers only the packaging and the condition on delivery. On the amplifier itself, its technology and performance were judged worth the premium price, and one buyer planned to get a second unit for another vehicle. The only reservation is that price itself, which the reviewer still considered justified.
Read it as a small, favourable sample. Two reviews were posted on the same November 2019 dates as reviews of the other VXi models at this retailer, and its stated policy is to remove negative comments it regards as unproven or biased. No independent long-form review turned up. If you run one, we'd welcome your feedback.
How it compares with JL's other five-channel amplifiers
JL's non-DSP five-channels cost far less. The JD700/5 (₹69,990 MRP) gives 75 W x 4 plus 180 W x 1 at 4 Ω, and the RD900/5 (₹79,990) gives 70 W x 4 at 4 Ω plus 500 W x 1 at 2 Ω. Adding a TwK88 processor (₹79,990) to the RD900/5 comes to ₹1,59,980, about ₹40,000 under the VX1000/5i, but with less bass power and two boxes to wire.
On paper the subwoofer channel matches JL's XDM600/1 monoblock (₹89,990), rated at 400 W at 4 Ω and 600 W at 2 Ω. Against the VX600/6i, the VX1000/5i costs ₹10,000 more and gives up two full-range channels, but its bass channel delivers 400 W at 4 Ω, twice what the six-channel model manages from a bridged pair into the same load, and 600 W at 2 Ω.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy it if you want an active two-way front or a front-and-rear speaker system plus a serious subwoofer, all tuned together and run from one box. It suits SUVs and sedans where a second amplifier would eat into boot or under-seat space.
Look elsewhere if you plan an active three-way front, because four main channels aren't enough. If you want a 1,000 W-class subwoofer, a dedicated monoblock is the better plan. And if tuning isn't a priority, the RD900/5 gets close on power for well under half the price.
Installation notes for Indian cars
JL specifies an 80 A fuse (AFS, AGU or MaxiFuse) and at least 4 AWG power and ground cable. The subwoofer has its own output harness in the box, separate from the speaker harness, which keeps the bass wiring easy to trace later.
The chassis measures 287 x 168 x 54 mm, and JL's own catalogue pictures VXi amplifiers fitted into a compartment beneath a rear seat. Under-seat mounting keeps the boot free in a compact SUV, but check that the seat mechanism clears the amplifier and that warm air can escape in summer. Dust and moisture from rough roads are reasons to avoid the spare-wheel well.
Wire dual-coil subwoofers in parallel to reach 2 Ω, and set the subwoofer level in TüN with test signals rather than by ear. If you'd rather not do it yourself, VA3 Car Studio fits complete VXi systems at our Ghaziabad studio and can confirm what suits your car before you order.
Price and where to buy
In the 2026 Indian price list the JL Audio VX1000/5i carries an MRP of ₹1,99,990. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP; see today's offer on our JL VX1000/5i listing. Every amplifier we supply is genuine JL Audio stock from the Indian distributor, Supreme Audiotek, and we can quote it together with a matching subwoofer.

The bottom line
The VX1000/5i is the most complete single-box system in JL's VXi range: four channels for the speakers, 600 W for the subwoofer and one DSP tying them together. Pair it with a dual 4 Ω, 600 W subwoofer wired to 2 Ω and an active two-way front, and you have a fully tuned system from one chassis. The owner evidence is slim, so a careful installation and tune decide the result.
JL Audio VX1000/5i FAQ
Which subwoofer suits the JL Audio VX1000/5i?
A dual 4 Ω subwoofer rated at 600 W RMS, wired in parallel to 2 Ω, matches the 600 W bass channel exactly; JL's 10W6v3-D4 and 12W6v3-D4 fit that description. A single 4 Ω subwoofer also works but receives 400 W.
Can the VX1000/5i work with a factory touchscreen head unit?
In most cars, yes. Its inputs accept 200 mV to 16 V RMS, which covers a typical factory head unit's speaker-level output, and the DSP then sets crossovers, EQ and delay for the speakers and subwoofer. We confirm the wiring for your car first.
Should I choose the VX1000/5i or the VX600/6i?
Choose the VX1000/5i if bass matters: its subwoofer channel gives 400 W at 4 Ω or 600 W at 2 Ω, against 200 W from two bridged VX600/6i channels. Choose the VX600/6i if you need six channels for an active three-way front and will add a separate subwoofer amplifier.
